I met Larry at Davis Int. He was bigger, faster, stronger and wilder than the rest of us. Not much of a student but plenty smart. The girls loved him and he loved the girls. Larry's older brother Jim was a matinee idol and all around athlete like Larry and dated the mayor's daughter. Linda Wilson, Randy Wilson's sister. So knowing Larry and being his good friend was like being connected. It was fun but Larry was rough and always full of piss and vinegar. When he moved to Newport Beach, his single mom (a total beauty herself)and his little sister got an apartment across Balboa Blvd. from the Lido Theater. I always paddle my outrigger canoe on long workouts right past the Elks under the bridge and always think of Larry spitting on boats passing under and wonder if someone like him is going to nail me sometime. He was a riot. Once at the Lido in 10th grade we were waiting to go in one evening when I was staying over for the weekend and I said,, "look at John Wayne coming" as he came down the walk from Lido Isle with his youngest infant son. Larry slugged me for lying and then said, "NO shit!" He walked right up and introduced himself and me and told Wayne that he was his neighbor and lived right over there as he pointed. Wayne said un huh nice, enjoy the movie guys. I told Larry he shouldn't have bothered him. Larry said, "TOO BAD" "HE's no different than us, really" When we came out of the show, John Wayne called us over and asked us if it would be ok with our parents if we joined him and his son for ice cream at the restaurant where the parking structure is now. Berkshires. That was something and we had a blast.
Larry finished his sophomore year at Mesa and then moved with his mom and sister and new step dad to Mammoth Lakes. We stayed in touch and he told me to come up and ski as he did every day. He visited Jim his brother a few times so I saw him again.
I received a note from his brother a few years later that Larry had a fatal accident while driving a dunebuggy over a sand cliff, tumbling falling out without a safety belt attached and being killed instantly by the buggy turning over him. I have never gotten over how reckless and how much fun Larry had. He cheated us all with his youthful passing.
He dated Karen Nunley, Connie Day, and Barbara Cook who themselves have died in auto related crashes.

He was swatting the girls away like flys. I wish that had happened to me. Dennis Madison who was a year or two older at Mesa was the same way.
